The MGM Grand and Cirque du Soleil have been assessed fines by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after the death of a performer.
Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell to her death during a performance in the summer, The Associated Press reports. The 31-year-old fell 94 feet after a wire rope snapped. She would be pronounced dead of brunt force trauma.
"She ascended too quickly which caused the rope to come out of the sheave/pulley," spokesperson for the Nevada Department of Business and Industry Teri Williams said. "The rope was severed when it encountered a sheer point. The Investigation concluded that she ascended too quickly, in part, because she did not receive proper training."
Cirque du Soleil Nevada will be assessed six citations and over #25,000 in fines and the MGM Grand was hit with three citations for $7,000.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, the OSHA report noted that Cirque failed to "protect or prevent 'Ka' employees from striking an overhead grid during the 'Ka' show at the 'Ka' Theater."
Other citations for the acrobatic company were inadequate training for the employee in "the use of equipment and tasks used in the 'Ka' Show battle scene," and removing equipment from the scene before OSHA had said the company could.
Both the MGM Grand and Cirque du Soleil plan to appeal the fines.
