New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo will miss the rest of the season as he was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.
May was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. He had surgery for a torn pectoral muscle on Tuesday, according to ESPN Boston. In five seasons in the NFL, Mayo, a two-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro selection in 2010, led the Patriots in tackles. This season he has 55 tackles.
"He does a lot for us, on the field, off the field. We're just going to have to move on," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.
Mayo isn’t the only Patriots player that’s on injured reserve. Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork tore his right Achilles tendon on September 29 and is on injured reserve, according to the Associated Press. Wilfork and Mayo are defensive captains.
Since 2010, May has had the most tackles in the NFL with 546. The Patriots have re-signed defensive tackle Andre Neblett, who will fill in for Mayo. Jamie Collins, who was the Patriots first-round draft choice, and Dane Fletcher could also fill in for Mayo. Mayo has missed just five regular-season games during his five seasons.
