Pennsylvania State University has settled for $59.7 million with 26 young men who claimed they had been sexually abused by former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
According to The Associated Press, the university had all but three deals signed with the accusers. Six more claims were rejected by Penn State, as the university doesn't believe the validity of those claims.
In addition to the $59.7 million in settlements, Penn State has spent $50 million because of the sex abuse scandal. The school has had to spend money on lawyers, public-relations, new policies to protect kids and on new ways to deal with complaints.
Penn State News reports that Penn State President Rodney Erickson said, "We hope this is another step forward in the healing process for those hurt by Mr. Sandusky, and another step forward for Penn State." He continued, "We cannot under what has been done, but we can and must do everything possible to learn from this and ensure it never happens again."
The AP reports that in 2012 Sandusky was convicted of 45 criminal counts. Three more former Penn State administrators are charged with covering up the sexual abuse scandal and await trial.
