Both the Patriots and Red Sox kept Boston fans on edge on Sunday.
Just minutes before the start of game two in the American League Championship Series, Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a comeback victory over the New Orleans Saints. The Boston Red Sox had a major comeback of their own to tie the ALCS up 1-1.
Tigers starting pitcher and possible Cy Young winner, Max Scherzer , was dealing early on. He had a no-hit bid through 6 2/3 innings until Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino broke it up with a single to right. Scherzer went 7 innings and only gave up two hits and one earned run, according to Yahoo Sports . Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz was impressive early on as well, only giving up one run through five innings.
The game was a pitcher’s duel until the top of the sixth inning. Buchholz was tagged for four runs in the inning, after Miguel Cabrera hit a homer over the green monster, then Prince Fielder doubled. Fielder scored on an RBI double from Victor Martinez. Then Alex Avila hit a two-run homer to right, and gave the Tigers 5-0 lead over the Red Sox. Buchholz went 5 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits and five earned runs.
It looked like the Tigers were going to cruise to victory, until the bottom of the eighth inning when none other than David “Big Papi” Ortiz crushed a grand slam to right field, and tied the game up 5-5 heading into the ninth inning.
The Red Sox retired the three straight batters in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Jarrod Saltamacchia knocked in Jonny Gomes on a base hit walk-off to shallow left, tying up the championship series before it headed to Detroit.
"This is the playoffs," Saltalamacchia said. "This is a fighting group. We're not going to get down on ourselves. We're going to keep battling. There's no one think that sparked us. It was guys grinding out at bats," according to the Chicago Tribune
