Robert Redford feels that some of the blame behind the government shutdown is on the shoulders of bigots.
Redford talked with CNN and suggested that racism was a motive behind some people letting the government shut down.
"I was trying to figure it out, why are these people behaving so stupidly? Why are they behaving so horribly that it's crippling our whole country?" the actor said. "And I think it has to do with fear."
The All the President's Men star continued, "I think it's a group of people that are so afraid of change, and they're so narrow-minded that some people - when they see change coming - get so threatened by change, they get angry and they get terrorized, and then they get vicious. I think that's who these people are."
Redford feels that President Barack Obama's opponents are loathe to give him any credit or success, "so they'll go against it. Never mind that it's the better good of the people, never mind that they're supposed to be in office representing the interest of the public."
So Redford suggested that younger people get involved in politics, E! News reports. "Give them the reins."
"I think they can do better than we have."
The 77-year-old actor can be seen in the new movie All Is Lost out in theaters Friday.
