Disney Animation supervisor Lino DiSalvo dug himself into a deep hole after making comments about animating the female characters in Disney's Frozen.
“Historically speaking, animating female characters are really, really difficult, ’cause they have to go through these range of emotions, but they’re very, very — you have to keep them pretty and they’re very sensitive to — you can get them off a model very quickly.” DiSalvo said in an interview with Fanvoice. “So, having a film with two hero female characters was really tough, and having them both in the scene and look very different if they’re echoing the same expression; that Elsa looking angry looks different from Anna being angry.”
Since DiSalvo's made the comment, the web has exploded with negative reactions.
The Huffington Post said that it is ridiculous that female characters would be any more difficult to animate than female characters, pointing out that both of the main animated characters in Frozen look suspiciously – if not exactly – the same as Rapunzel from Tangled.
Disney's Frozen, which features Idina Menzzel as the voice of Elsa and Kristen Bell as the voice of Anna, will open in theaters on Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. In previous years, Thanksgiving has been a popular release date for Disney, as the Tangled (2010) theatrical release and the Brave (2012) DVD release also happened within days of the holiday.
