Even though NBC and CNN have both cancelled their high-profile projects about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, there are still two projects that are moving forward. Conservative group Citizens United is still working on a movie about her tenure as Secretary of State and Hollywood is working on a script about her early career as a lawyer.
NBC and CNN both ended their projects on Monday. NBC had planned a four-hour miniseries with Diane Lane as Clinton, while CNN Films had been working on a documentary about her life. CNN’s project died when the director dropped out and the network opted to not find a replacement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Citizens United is working on its own documentary, which it hopes to release in 2016, just before the presidential election that year. The group had won a Supreme Court case to get their 2008 Clinton documentary, Hillary: The Movie, on TV and they hope to use that victory to their advantage with the untitled 2016 film.
The movie will focus on Clinton’s career in the State Department. Citizens United president and chairman David Bossie told THR that he had wished that NBC and CNN did make their projects, so he could compare their viewpoints.
“NBC was casting Diane Lane as Hillary Clinton. Come on. They were doing everything in their power to make Hillary look good, which is their right,” he told THR. “But ours will not be a puff piece designed to promote a Hillary Clinton presidency.”
Their film will be released on DVD and in theaters.
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Young Il Kim’s script Rodham is still in production in Hollywood, with James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) set to direct. This is the project that Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Amanda Seyfried were linked to over the summer, but Chastain said that she hadn’t even seen a script.
Rodham would focus on Clinton’s career as a lawyer in Washington during Watergate.
