New York’s indie rock band Widowspeak, is releasing their new EP The Swamps on October 29.

The Swamps, which can easily fall within the lines of dark folk, is permeated with beautiful and haunting tracks, carrying the images of a deep dark forest and eerie swamps, mashed with hazy, enchanted, floating and dreamy vocals that make each individual song so unique and mesmerizing.

“Theme from The Swamps” is a no-lyric track that sets the mood of the album and takes us to the swamps. Dark guitars and mysterious humming make the track absolutely magical. Frogs, crickets, birds, all the natural inhabitants of the swamp have been instrumentally brought to life. Maybe we can’t see the swamp, but we can hear it and envision it in our minds.

“Smoke and Mirrors” is an energetic track, with vivacious and rolling sound of the guitars, hazy vocals and that mysterious humming that was carried over from the “Theme From The Swamps.”

“Calico”is dominated by seductive guitars and sweet and dreamy vocals that transition into chanting. “Calico, Calico, Calico…”

“Brass Bed” is a track that acoustically tricks us into thinking that it’s more upbeat, but then it’s transformed by the lyrics that turn it into a dark and nostalgic track.

“True Believer” carries the similar sound (only faster) and similar guitar riff to the one we already heard in the swamps. With overlapping sentimental and echoing vocals, this track is absolutely spellbinding.

“The Swamps” is the continuation of “The Theme From The Swamps,” which brings the EP full circle. Only this time, we can hear sweet and mellow vocals that combined with the enthralling instrumentals make a track that sounds like a hazy dream.

Overall, The Swamps is cohesive, magical and hypnotizing. It is definitely worth giving a listen.
