After The Best Man Holiday came in a surprisingly strong second place at the box office this weekend, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Universal wants to capitalize and make another film. Writer/director Malcolm D. Lee is already in talks with the studio to make a third Best Man movie.

Lee would come back to write and direct the new film, as he did for 1999’s The Best Man and for the new The Best Man Holiday, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Sean Daniel and Lee will produce.

The filmmaker recently told TheWrap that he needed time before he could take on the characters he created in Best Man again, which explains why it took 14 years to make Holiday. While there’s no timetable set for the third film, Universal probably isn’t going to wait another 14 years.

Holiday only cost the studio $17 million to make, but it grossed $30.5 million, only $8 million less than Thor: The Dark World. It’s expected to continue to do well throughout the rest of the holidays as word-of-mouth hopefully brings in broader audiences. Over the opening weekend, 87 percent of the audience was African-American.

Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Nia Long and Monica Calhoun starred in the first two Best Man holidays, but they haven’t signed on for the third yet. The first film grossed $9 million when it opened.
