Hollywood has a lot to be thankful for this year, especially thanks to the amazing success of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Disney’s new animated film Frozen. Although Catching Fire has been out since last week, audiences are still flocking to see it and Frozen’s fantastic reviews have guaranteed Disney another hit.
As previously reported, Catching Fire made around $15 million on Thanksgiving alone. The film opened last week to $161.1 million, moving just past the first Hunger Games and setting the record for the best November opening ever.
On Wednesday, which began the five-day weekend for many students around the country, Catching Fire took off with $21.5 million, according to Deadline. The site is also adjusting Thursday up to $15.5 million and notes that it swung back up to $31 million, based on early Friday data.
Put all that together, including projected Saturday and Sunday numbers and the film should be able to cross the $100 million mark over five days. That would zoom past the previous Thanksgiving mark set by Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, which made $82 million over the holiday weekend.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Catching Fire is now up to $290 million after only ten days. It’s going to have no problem passing The Hunger Games’ $408 million start.
Frozen has been out since Wednesday and made $15.3 million that day. It added $11.1 million on Thanksgiving, which would easily top Tangled’s $19.9 million start in 2010. The Disney fairy tale film could add another $64 million from Friday to Sunday, putting it on track to a stunning $90 million start (which would also beat The Sorcerer’s Stone).
Homefront with Jason Statham is only expected to make $9.5 million over five days, while Black Nativity may only gross $3.8 million.
