The sequel to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster Independence Day has been rescheduled and will not be released until July 2016, nearly 20 years to the day that the original film was released.
ID4 2, also known as ID Forever Part 1, was officially announced in June and scheduled for July 3, 2015. However, Box Office Mojo posted a new date for the 20th Century Fox film. It will now be out on July 1, 2016 instead.
Since ID4 2 was announced, there had been little news on the film. Emmerich is confirmed to return and he worked with Dean Devlin and James Vanderbilt on different drafts of the script.
As for the cast, Emmerich has said that he’s if Will Smith will return, but did say that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman would make cameos. Fruitvale Station actor Michael B. Jordan has been linked to the film, but nothing has been confirmed.
Fox had a busy Tuesday, shifting release dates for its Fantastic Four reboot, Secret Service and Assasin’s Creed. Fantastic Four will now be released in June 16, 2015 and Assassin’s Creed was moved to August 2015. So, even without ID4 2, the studio will have plenty of expensive, potential blockbusters hitting theaters that summer.
