The Broadway show with the highest budget ever, “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark”, will end its run on Broadway early this January and will move to Las Vegas instead.
“Spider-man” cost about $75 million to produce, making it the most expensive Broadway show in history. There were also legal disputes in 2011 when director Julie Taymor (“The Lion King”) was fired from the show, reports Reuters.
It had a rough start, with six cast injuries during production and delays on its opening nights, but ended up becoming a popular show. The show eventually became one of the most attended shows on Broadway.
However, it still wasn’t enough. The San Francisco Gate reports that the show needs to earn $1.2 million a week in order to break even, but it has not even reached $1 million a week in sales since August.
Last week, the show did not even make it to $800,000 in ticket sales.
The show opened in June 2011 but will close early this January so no more money will be lost on the production, but it will still remain open through the holiday tourist season, reports the Wall Street Journal.
But “Spider-Man” won’t hang up the suit forever. The show will pack its bags and move across the country to re-open in Las Vegas in 2015.
"Economically we have a greater opportunity in the Las Vegas market," show producer Jeremiah Harris said, according to the Journal. "Over the last week we've finalized all the creative deals, and are in serious negotiations with a venue in Las Vegas."
Further details about the move will be available in the weeks to come.
