Korra and Jinora’s trip to the spirit world goes south when they’re separated. Korra receives help from an old friend. Meanwhile, Jinora’s search for Korra takes her to a location that should be very familiar for fans of the original series.

Korra and Jinora have barely taken more than three steps before they encounter trouble. Really, it’s Korra who causes the trouble when she encounters some annoying mole spirits. She gets frustrated quickly, and her negative energy starts to affect the spirits. Korra and Jinora fall through a hole and are separated after being attacked by a giant crocodile spirit.

Korra ends up in a dark forrest and her spirit form turns into a child version of herself. Jinora lands in a different and more normal looking area, seemingly unaffected by the dark energy. She bumps into one of her dragonfly bunny friends, who is much larger in the spirit world, and he offers her a ride to help her find Korra. Korra makes a new friend when she accidentally injures a small dragon bird.

We get a delightful surprise when Korra runs into one of the most popular and beloved characters from The Last Airbender. Uncle Iroh emerges from the shadows to help her and lead her out of the dark forest.

Furryfoot and Jinora make their way through the spirit world and come across Wan Shi Tong’s Library. The library was last seen in the original Airbender series as the owl spirit Wan Shi Tong sank it into the desert. Apparently, it spent a while buried before making its way back to the spirit world, because we see the remains of Professor Zei surrounded by books.

Wan Shi Tong tries to kick Jinora out of the library, but she convinces him to let her stay after informing him that she has come to the spirit world with the Avatar. Jinora searches for information about the spirit portals and their location when Wan Shi Tong returns to the library with Unalaq in tow. Unalaq turns Furryfoot into a dark spirit and captures Jinora.

Meanwhile, Korra has tea with Iroh and some of his spirit friends. Iroh teaches Korra how people’s emotions affect the spirit world and how her emotions have a greater effect because she is the Avatar. He offers his wisdom to Korra in the same way he always helped Zuko, and he sends her on a quest to return the dragon bird she befriended to its nest.

Korra climbs to the top of a mountain and returns the dragon bird to its nest. It joins with other dragon birds and they become a large phoenix type spirit. The dragon bird takes Korra to the portal where she encounters Vaatu and Unalaq. Unalaq forces her to open the portal by threatening to destroy Jinora’s soul and attacks Korra as soon as she opens the portal.

Having entered the spirit world through meditation instead of via the portal, Korra has no bending. Without her bending, she’s defeated quickly and is about to be destroyed by Unalaq when the dragon bird makes a last minute save. During the battle, Jinora is taken by one of Unalaq’s dark spirits, but before Korra can try and save her, she awakens back in the human world. Tenzin rushes to her, but when he realizes that Jinora has not awoken, he asks Korra where his daughter is.
