Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World is already sizing up to be another successful addition to the franchise.
Thursday night preview showings, which premiered at over 3,100 locations, made $7.1 million in North America alone, Deadline reports.
The movie also topped this weekend’s box office with a profit of $86.1 million, according to Business Week. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa came in a distant second with $11.3 million.
Thor’s large opening gives it the fourth highest grossing opening weekend of the year, behind Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and Fast and Furious 6. The sequel has also out earned its predecessor, which made $65.7 million in it’s opening weekend in May 2011.
Thor: The Dark World premiered overseas last Wednesday and has since earned over $240.9 million, reports The New York Times.
Thor: The Dark World stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston. In the film, Thor (Hemsworth) has to save the world from a universe-destroying substance released from the Dark Elves, while dealing with his scheming brother Loki (Hiddleston).
