Thor: The Dark World easily opened at the top of the box office this weekend and while it didn’t reach Iron Man 3 levels, it did show that The Avengers continues to have a positive effect on Marvel films.

The Dark World, starring Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god, opened at 3,841 locations and grossed $86.1 million, according to early estimates, notes Box Office Mojo. That’s a 31 percent jump over the $65.7 million opening for 2011’s Thor.

However, only 39 percent of its total gross came from 3D showings, a huge disappointment for Disney and Marvel. The studio hoped that a Captain America: The Winter Soldier preview before 3D screenings may have helped, but it wasn’t a big enough excuse for audiences to pay the premium. The Dark World earned an A- CinemaScore grade from audiences, but the audience was older - 61 percent were over 25.

Despite any disappointments domestically, The Dark World continues to make a killing overseas. The Hollywood Reporter notes that it has already grossed $240.9 million overseas. By comparison, Thor made $268 million in total, including domestic gross.

Jackass: Bad Grandpa added $11.3 million, while Free Birds and Last Vegas made $11.2 million and $11.1 million, respectively. Ender’s Game is shaping up to be a bomb, making just $10.3 million. It has made $44 million after ten days. Gravity is now at $231.1 million after making another $8.4 million this weekend.

According to Deadline, 12 Years A Slave expanded to 1,144 locations and grossed $6.6 million. That put it in seventh place.
