Walt Disney Studios is topping its previous global box office record of $3.791 billion, set in 2010. Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World has lifted the worldwide box office for Disney to over $348.5 million.

Hypable reported that the Thor sequel made $86 million dollar in its opening weekend.

Variety added that Disney was the first studio to reach the $1 billion dollar box office milestone back in July. This was the eight-year in a row that Disney met this milestone.

The box office goal was met with help from Iron Man 3 which opened May 3 and make over $1.21 billion worldwide. Marvel’s Iron Man 3 became the year’s top-grossing film and is now the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

Disney still has three films set for release in 2013, so the box office numbers could increase. Disney is set to release Frozen, Saving Mr. Banks and Delivery Man. Frozen is likely to do well with families and Saving Mr. Banks has been receiving Oscar buzz.
