A shooting took place at a Detroit barbershop Wednesday night in which two people were killed and several others were injured.

The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. local time in Detroit’s east side, at a barbershop that is known for being an illegal gambling spot. It is not clear at this time just how many suspects opened fire in Al’s Barber Shop.

Police Chief James Craig told reporters at the barbershop that multiple suspects engaged a few others before “several shots were fired,” according to CBS News.

Police spokeswoman Kelly Miner said that two cars stopped in front of the barbershop and passengers in both of the cars began firing at each other.

"What happened was somebody at the barber shop heard all this commotion, opened the door. And then shots were fired into the barber shop," Miner said in her statement, reports .

One witness reported hearing up to 40 shots fired.

Some of the shots made it into the barbershop, which sent the people inside running for cover, some to other businesses on the street. Miner said that it was not clear if any arrests had been made in the shooting.

USA Today reports that local police are currently looking for the two cars, which are a black Chevrolet Impala and a white Impala.

It is not clear if anyone in the barbershop was being targeted. Police have not determined a motive in the shooting.

Two people were killed in the shooting and eight others were injured, all of them male. The victims were taken to various nearby hospitals for treatment, with one of the victims in critical condition.

The conditions of the victims and their names have not been released.
