Another member of the Bush family is entering politics. George P. Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George W. Bush’s nephew, has filed paperwork to run for a major statewide office in Texas.

Bush, 37, filed papers to run for Texas land commissioner on Tuesday. As the Houston Chronicle notes, he is a young Spanish-speaking candidate and his entrance into politics comes as Republicans are trying to get more Hispanic support.

So far, his competition in his own party is East Texas businessman David Watts, while former El Paso Mayor John Cook will run in the Democratic primary. The current land commissioner, Jerry Patterson, is hoping to be the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor.

Bush is the son of Jeb Bush and his wife, Columba, who was born in Mexico. According to Reuters, he is a lawyer and co-founded the Hispanic Republicans of Texas. His wife Amanda is also a lawyer and they live in Fort Worth.

His campaign said that he once clerked for a federal judge and then joined the Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP firm. He’s also co-founded investment and real estate private equity firms.

Bush’s uncle, George W. Bush, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this week in a rare public appearance. He has stayed out of the limelight since leaving office in 2009. According to the New York Daily News, George W. Bush said he would like to see Jeb Bush run for president, since “he'd be a great president.”
