Around 48,000 runners participated in the ING New York City Marathon Sunday. One of the most popular marathons in the world, the race has been run every year since 1970, with the exception of last year's race, which was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.
The streets of New York were lined with countless runners, wheelchair athletes, volunteers, spectators and residents to support the marathon. Most of the participants in the race were chosen to run via a lottery system. Among them were several celebrities. Many of the supermodels, actors/actresses and reality stars seen at the race trained for months in an effort to get in shape and run for charity. Whether they were running for their own charity organization or one they support in honor of a loved one, each celebrity finished the full 26.2 miles with pride.
Here is a list of some of the celebrities who were spotted running the marathon.
Christy Turlington Burns
The supermodel ran to benefit her organization Every Mother Counts, which she created to stop deaths caused by limited access to medical care for pregnant and birthing women. She posted a photo on Instagram while waiting at the starting line.
Sarah Reinertsen
The Amazing Race star ran to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps people who need prosthetic running feet, wheelchairs for playing basketball, handcycles and other special sports equipment. Reinertsen was the first female leg-amputee to complete the Ironman World Championship, and now she has the New York City Marathon under her belt as well. The Challenged Athletes Foundation posted a photo of the runner at the race on Twitter.
