Nashville police said Sunday that an investigation was ongoing in relation to a fatal shooting that occurred inside a Nashville bar in the early hours of Saturday morning.
USA Today reported that Wayne Mills, 44, was shot by Pit and Barrel bar owner Chris Ferrell. Ferrell explained to police that he shot in self-defense following an argument over Mills smoking in the bar.
The police announced that they are now investigating Ferrell’s claim of self-defense.
Mills was known for touring with the Wayne Mills Band, which was very popular on the college circuit. The country band performed with big name artists including Taylor Hicks, Jamey Johnson and Blake Shelton.
Shelton later tweeted out his condolences to Mills and his family.
Extremely sad to hear about the death of my old friend Wayne Mills @WayneMillsBand... Rest in peace brother. Love you Carol.

Pit and Barrel was to have been aired Sunday on Spike TV's Bar Rescue, but the cable network decided to pull the episode in favor of a rerun, the Associated Press reported.
