Deborah Crooks, a California-based singer and songwriter has released a new album titled Little Bird.
The album that was released on November 5 happens to be Crooks’ third full-length album after Adding Water To The Ashes (2008), 2010 (2011) and two EPs, 5 Acres (2003) and Turn It All Red (2007).
Crooks music can be described as Americana and blues, but her talent and creativity definitely can’t be limited to only two genres. She has the ability to masterfully move between genres and even incorporate other musical styles to make her music sound fresh and unique.
Her songs are permeated with a little bit of Cali sunshine and lightness of a summer air, just like in an acoustic guitar-driven track “Turn The Key.” Things can also get quite funky like in a “Bittersweet Valentine,” a track that deals with the duality of love, accompanied by some groovy guitars. Or “Little Bird,” a slowed-down self-reflective ballad that examines the state of the consciousness. Crooks starts the song with a line, “consciousness is a bird in a cage” that gives a listener an indication that she/he is being drawn into something very personal. “Looking Down The Road” has that classic rock feel to it and features dominant drums, underlying bass and an amazing virtuosic guitar riff in the middle of the track. Then there’s a sentimental, melancholic ballad, “Little League” with Crooks singing “50 percent I’m free/is no way to be…”
All in all, Little Bird is thriving sonically, vocally and lyrically. It is self-reflective and wonderfully observant journey across the genres dealing with relevant and quite personal themes.
