Delta Rae is a folk rock band from Durham, North Carolina whose music will surely throw you into a twister of emotions, mythology, tradition and folklore, all aspects that make their music so incredibly mystical, magical and highly addictive.

The band consists of siblings Ian Hölljes (vocals, guitar), Eric Hölljes (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Brittany Hölljes (vocals, percussion), as well as Elizabeth Hopkins (vocals, percussion), Mike McKee (drums) and Grant Emerson (bass).

The band’s name was derived from a story that mother of Hölljes siblings has written and it involves a Southern girl named Delta Rae who summons the Greek Gods to save her family.

After releasing their debut album Carry The Fire back in 2012, the band has released the new EP Chasing Twisters on November 15.

In an interview for Elle Magazine, Hopkins has said that, “Chasing Twisters is based on Pecos Bill, who is a cowboy that lassos tornadoes, so we believe in magic. We believe in folklore. That's a huge part of being from the South, I think, and that's very intertwined in our band and the way that we sound in the songs that we make.”

The truth about Delta Rae’s music is that it is not just music, but rather an experience. The listener is sent on a journey through the picturesque landscapes of the South, all wrapped up in the veils of magic, mysticism and folklore.

So, lets chase twisters and see where they’ll blow us.

Chasing Twisters

Is a perfect opening song that truly sets the mood and gasps the whole concept of the EP. The track has a Western Spaghetti feel to it with whistles and rattling. It first opens with powerful, loud drums and then it’s accompanied by wild, rolling guitars, all ornamented with Hopkins’ powerful, raspy vocals and underlying sentimental piano.

Run

Is an upbeat track that explodes with energy and life. The instrumentals are glorious, consisted of dominant drums, vivacious guitars and accompanied by gentle, yet powerful vocals and breathy back up vocals that literally breathe the life into this song.

If I Loved You (feat. Lindsey Buckingham)

Is a guitar and piano dominated ballad, but certainly not lacking the energy of the previous two tracks. It is accompanied by Hopkins’ sentimental vocals that intensify by the chorus and ooze with honest, pure, heartbreaking emotion. The song features Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, a legendary guitarist and vocalist of Fleetwood Mac.

Dance In The Graveyards

Never have we grasped the concept of a graveyard as anything less than eerie and haunted. However, this song offers an alternative view on a place that makes the hair on the back of our necks stand up. The song features potent drums, clapping, playful piano and buzzing guitars that make this track so lively. It is an anthem that celebrates the afterlife in all its glory.

I Will Never Die

Is a haunting and truly bewitching track that has so many layers, which will make you dig deeper and demand you to listen to it carefully to fully grasp its essence. With dominant drums and witchy, lush vocals the song is just like a tribal chant.

Overall, Chasing Twisters is a truly enthralling musical experience. It is like blowing the dust of an old book and getting lost into its yellowed pages consisted of folklore tales, myths and stories about magic, love, life and death.
