Dexter, the much-loved dog of Jacob Montgomery has been found alive nine days after being buried in rubble by a tornado. The 6-month-old pit bull was found under the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Washington, Illinois. Dexter is extremely malnourished but is healthy otherwise and said to be recovering.
Jacob Montgomery was separated from his dog when a tornado destroyed his third story apartment. He searched through the wreckage several times to no avail. The Associated Press has reported that Montgomery’s dog Dexter was discovered by a neighbor who was searching for his missing cat. He was coaxed out with hot dogs. Montgomery found out his dog was alive when he received a Facebook message.
Jacob Montgomery has served as a military police officer in The National Guard for the last five years. As such, he is trained to deal with weather-related emergencies but this is the first time he has been a victim of one. Dexter’s tail started wagging as soon as he saw Montgomery, The two are staying with one of Montgomery’s friends until they find a new home.
Fifteen Illinois counties were ravaged by tornadoes just days before the Thanksgiving holiday. The state’s local news channel, WGNtv.com, reports that President Obama has declared the area a disaster, thus paving the way for local residents who were hurt by the tornadoes to receive federal grant money.
