A family said that they were the victim of a hoax, in which a gay waitress claimed the family refused to tip her because she is gay. The waitress posted a picture of the receipt without the tip, but they claim that the receipt the waitress shared and later went viral was a fake.

Earlier this month, Dayna Morales, a former Marine, said that a family she served at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, New Jersey would not tip her because they assumed she was gay. “I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life,” she claimed the wife in the family wrote in place of a tip. The story was reported around the country and the picture circulated on social media. The restaurant manager even issued a statement supporting Morales.

But it all might just be a hoax. A family contacted NBC 4 New York with a receipt that showed that they did give her a tip, plus they had a credit card statement to prove it. The receipt shows the $93.55 total, as did Morales’ receipt, but theirs has a $18 tip. Their Visa bill also shows that the restaurant charged them $111.55.

The wife - who Morales claimed thought she was a man at first - told NBC NY that she’s left handed and that the writing on the receipt didn’t match her handwriting. “We've never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that,” she said.

The husband and wife even said that they have worked in restaurants in the past and know that tipping is important, Plus, the husband said he didn’t vote for Gov. Chris Christie because he supports gay marriage. “Never would a message like that come from us,” the husband said.

As for Morales, she told NBC NY Monday that the handwriting on the receipt isn’t hers either and she knows she never got the tip. “I don't know, all I know is what I've been saying,” she said.

The restaurant’s management can’t figure out why the family was charged more than $93.55,although they didn’t give NBC NY the original receipt.
