Wanna hear something hauntingly beautiful? If yes, then listen to Father John Misty’s score for a short film The History of Caves. If the answer is no, I’ll still say that you should give it a listen, because you won’t regret it.
Father John Misty is Josh Tillman’s pseudonym and his newest solo project after departing from Fleet Foxes, where he was a drummer for some time. After releasing seven solo albums and four EPs, Fear Fun (2012) was the first that Tillman released under the name Father John Misty.
The History of Caves was written and directed by Tillman’s wife, Emma, who is a photographer and filmmaker. The film deals with family issues and tells a story of a single father and his relationship with his children. A new woman that has walked into their lives will shake the foundation of the relationship that they have built.
When asked by Rolling Stone, how it came to the collaboration between him and his wife, Tillman has said: [Emma] just kind of rolled over in bed and asked me to. It's pretty simple. I don't have any real aspirations to score films or anything, but it was an instance where I understood her… I'm trying to avoid using the word "vision"... I understood the way in which she wanted to communicate her story.
According to Pitchfork, the film will be released soon on Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. Father John Misty’s label, SubPop will release 2,000 limited-edition vinyl copies of film soundtrack.
The stream below features 10 instrumental, dark and haunting, yet beautiful tracks that absolutely complement the film and properly set the mood of it. The History Of Caves is certainly not a lightweight story and its gloominess has been fully grasped by the music that adds to that sentiment of somberness. Dark, yet stunning. A thriving musical accomplishment.
