After a hot air balloon crashed and exploded in southern California this weekend, four people were injured.
The balloon was carrying five passengers when it crashed in the vineyards near Temecula Saturday morning. One person was severely burned, one walked away completely unhurt, and the other three suffered minor injuries, according to CBS.
A recent study in the Journal of Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine found that 80 percent of hot air balloon crashes result in serious injury or death. The study also found that the most common injury is broken legs, and most injuries occur upon landing, according to the Huffington Post.
However, explosions like the incident in California this weekend do not appear to be a common occurrence with hot air balloons. Normally, crashes occur when the balloon collides with something like a tree or power line.
Officials remain unsure whether the explosion was the cause of the crash or the result of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing to investigate the incident.
