Taking on edgier rolls like the critically panned Spring Breakers, Vanessa Hudgens actually had a stellar performance in her On Demand movie Frozen Ground with Nicholas Cage and John Cusack, very raw and completely un-glamorous. The new independent film Gimme Shelter that stars Hudgens could be the breakthrough performance that former Disney star has been looking for.
Based on a true story Gimme Shelter follows Apple (Hudgens) a 16-year-old pregnant runaway as she tries to find life, and herself, in a homeless shelter. E! News sat down with the star who stated the most demanding and difficult part was the birth scene.
"I've never shot a birthing scene and I ended up popping blood vessels in my face," the High School Musical alum stated. She also called the experience “surreal.”
Yahoo premiered the trailer with a brief introduction from Hudgens herself who states that it was a challenging roll.
Rosario Dawson plays Hudgens drug ridden Mom, and Brendan Fraser her absent father who she tries to reconnect with before heading to a shelter. At the shelter she meets Father McCarthy played by James Earl Jones who takes her under his wing.
Gimme Shelter was written and directed by Ron Krauss and is due in theaters January 24, 2014.
