Hannah vs. The Many is a Brooklyn-based band that will surely capture your attention with their unusual musical style that mashes together indie rock and musical theater.
The band consists of singer and songwriter Hannah Fairchild, Josh Fox (lead guitar), Carl Limbacher (bass) and Daniel Muhlenberg (drums, banter). After releasing their first full-length All Our Heroes Drank Here album last year, the band has released a new EP titled Ghost Stories on November 12.
Hannah states in her bio that she moved to New York City with hopes that she will work in a non-existent “seedy underground indie musical theater community.” When she realized that the state of things were not as she hoped to be, she started writing and took the things in her own hands.
The result is a variety of songs dealing with “heartbreak, hook-ups, drunken victories, narrow escapes and all the other "pretty little tragedies" that come with being young and broke in the greatest city in the world.”
Ghost Stories EP opens with a wild, upbeat track “Poor Leander” featuring blazing guitars, energetic drums and passionate vocals that swiftly narrate the story of poor Leander. This is where Hannah’s musical theater background shines through. With fiery observations and lively instrumentals, she is reminiscent of a female version of Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz.
Then we have guitar and drums-driven, slightly slowed down, but still quite energetic “All Eyes On Me.” And “Slow Burn” that slows down the album with seductive, slow guitars, buzzing drums and nostalgic, sentimental vocals. Then the drums-dominated “Lady Of The Court” picks up the tempo a little bit, only to end with an emotional piano and a broken “how did I get here?” Finally, ”Nicollet” wraps up the album on a peaceful note with a sad piano, slowed-down drums and wistful vocals that leave the lingering sense of somberness.
Overall, Ghost Stories is a beautiful, yet melancholic and nostalgic collection of stories narrated by its author from a dimly lit, smoke covered stage on a mysterious New York City night. It is quite unique and quite a journey. Highly recommended!
