Once a Beach Fossils’ member, John Peña left the band in 2011 to start his new project Heavenly Beats. Prominence comes as a second full-length album and year after the debut album Talent.

If you’re digging Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, The XX and High Higs, you are going to love Heavenly Beats.

A little bit of indie, synth and dream pop, Prominence lists nine chill tracks which content deals with self-image, self-reflection and relationships.

Explained in the bio: “Lyrically, PROMINENCE is not an escapist affair. It’s a very direct look into someone dealing with poor body image(Thin), infidelity(Honest) and emotional/ physical/ sexual recklessness(Prominence).”

Sonically and vocally we’re talking about heavenly beats (I swear, there is no better description), ambient, hovering guitars and breathy, hazy and caressing vocals that carry the emotional bulk of the album. Then we have emotional piano and mellotron that add to the sentiment, steel drums that give songs the edge and clinkety tambourines that add warmth and playfulness.

Album is also thriving lyrically.Heavenly Beats has said that his favorite track is:

“The title track for sure. The lyrics really sum up everything that I was feeling for a better part of the last year. “Think of you as an alter/what could I hope to offer?” is probably my favorite line I’ve ever written…sometimes I’m a real big fan of me and my writing.”

Overall, Prominence is a soul-searching journey wrapped up in celestial instrumentals and definitely worth giving a listen.
