Jamie Dornan is ready for the challenge that is portraying everyone’s favorite tortured billionaire, Christian Grey, the film adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey.
Dornan, who replaced Charlie Hunnam last month, talked about his excitement to start filming in Vancouver soon.
“I certainly don’t fear it,” he told EW. “I already got a glimpse into working with [director] Sam [Taylor-Johnson] at the test, and I’d met [co-star] Dakota [Johnson] by then. So I had a glimpse into how I felt it would be if I got the part. None of it scared me.”
He talked about being optimistic when Hunnam landed the part over him, and didn’t rule out the fact that producers might “revisit” the notion he could play Grey.
“You know, one door closes, another opens. When he dropped out, I didn’t instantly think, ‘Oh here we go, maybe I should cancel that holiday,’ but I did feel that maybe we’d revisit the idea of me,” he said.
The Northern Irish actor flew out to Los Angeles to test with Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele for a grueling day. They did the interview scene from the beginning when they first met and another from the end.
“There’s quite a lot going on in both scenes. The interview scene is sort of a condensed version of the journey that the two of them go on. There are so many layers in it. It’s a beast,” he said.
Dornan added that he does “take decent enough care of myself anyway” but he will work out to portray Grey. “I’ve never felt that Christian needs to be some kind of monster, but I think it’s very clear how he conditions himself and looks after himself. Obviously I’m gonna up it slightly with training, but we don’t have any intention to really bulk up. I don’t think it’s appropriate.”
As we previously reported the film's release date has been pushed back to Valentine's Day 2015.
