After the success of Juno, Up in the Air, and Thank You for Smoking, Jason Reitman branches out from his usual dark comedies and directs Labor Day, a drama starring Kate Winslet an Josh Brolin.
Adele (Winslet), a lonely single mother, and her son Henry (Dylan Minnette) are taken hostage in their own home by Frank Chamber (Brolin). Before long, they discover that Frank is an escaped convict, who was serving 18 years for murder.
Frank assures Adele that he never intentionally hurt anyone, and as the man hunt for the ex-con rages on, she starts to believe his story and even develops feelings for him.
According to The Wrap, Labor Day is a coming of age story about Henry rather than a romance between Adele and Frank. The two and a half minute trailer, however, concentrates heavily on the relationship between the two adults.
“They were two people who couldn’t go out in the world, so they made a world with each other,” an adult Henry (Tobey Maguire) says.
This is the first trailer for the film, so it’s possible that a more Henry focused trailer will be released later.
What is certain is that Labor Day is a departure for Reitman. While introducing the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, Reitman said, “If you came expecting a comedy tonight, I apologize in advance.”
The film is all drama as Adele battles depression, Frank tries to evade the authorities, and an impressionable Henry attempts to cope with it all.
Labor Day will squeeze into theaters just in time for Academy Award consideration with a limited release on Christmas Day.
