There have been many organizations that fight for pay, benefits, what-have-you, from professional sports teams to city-run transit. In an attempt to have earnings for his dancers count toward pension and health benefit eligibility, Justin Timberlake and the The Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA came to an agreement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Timberlake and SAG-AFTRA came to an agreement that his dancers would be covered by the SAG-AFTRA Touring Agreement. The deal also provides touring companies with what the union called "improved budget flexibility through direct negotiations with performers."
Variety also noted that the Timberlake deal represents the first time that member performers have successfully organized dancers employed on a specific tour under its touring agreement. The agreement has been previously used for back-up singers for artist such as Martina McBride and Josh Groban.
SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard stated that the singer really took the lead on the deal and showed how Timberlake’s “support for his fellow SAG-AFTRA members in unionizing his tour was a key element,” really sealed the deal.
Timberlake’s current 20/20 Experience World Tour runs through North America for the remainder of 2013, heading overseas in April 2014, then concluding back in North American in August 2014.
