Bending to some parents' wishes, Kraft announced that the company will be removing some of the artificial coloring from its character-shaped line of Macaroni and Cheese, meaning the color will be a little less yellow than it used to be.
CNN reports that starting in 2014, the character-shaped line of Mac and Cheese, like Spongebob Squarepants and some holiday styles, will feature less artificial dyes and be slightly healthier.
In place of Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6, spices will be used for coloring. There will also be six more grams of whole grains, a reduction in saturated fat and sodium.
Kraft spokesperson Lynne Galia said in an email, "Parents have told us they would like fun Mac & Cheese varieties with the same great taste, but with improved nutrition."
Despite the changes to some of Kraft's macaroni, the change does not include the elbow-shaped macaroni or twists, ABC News reports. This perplexed some as to why not the whole line of Mac and Cheese, but most are happy Kraft is listening.
Lisa Leake and Vani Hari started a petition last March asking for changes. Hari commented, "I was so shaken with the news that my body was trembling. I have been fighting so hard for these 348,000 people, being their voice."
She added, "I have built an army of people concerned about food and not only what their families are eating, but all of America."
Hari noted that Mac and Cheese in the U.K. is dye-free due to stricter rules, so Kraft uses paprika and natural beta carotene for the color.
