A Latvian supermarket's roof collapsed on Thursday in the capital city of Riga.
BBC News reports that at least 51 people are dead and three emergency workers are included in that number. They became trapped when more of the roof came down as they were escorting people out.
A survivor, Paul Tribble, spoke about the roof collapse saying, "I was taken down by shelving falling on me, which skimmed my shoulder and forced me to the ground but I was still able to move."
Heavy rains and lack of proper drainage may have caused the roof to collapse where a garden addition was being built.
According to The Telegraph, Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs expects there to be more dead still in the supermarket since it is believed that there are still 30 more people trapped.
"Most likely they will all be dead. We hope there will be survivors but now it's more than 24 hours and the chances aren't that high," Usakovs said.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the incident, a spokesperson, Tom Sadovskis said. "We have three lines of investigation, all linked to possible violations of construction laws. At the moment we are interviewing everyone involved, and we still have a lot of work to do."
The roof collapse is the worst incident to hit the country since it became an independent country in 1991.
