Marvel Universe is creating more diversity among their superheroes by creating a new Muslim superhero named Kamala Khan.

Tribune.com reported that Kamala Khan is a 16-year-old Muslim girl and is a superhero of Pakistani descent. Khan’s superhero name is Ms. Marvel.

The young superhero will not only be fighting bad guys, but stereotypes of Muslims in America reported the Huffington Post.

The story of Khan came about thanks to Marvel editors Sana Amanat and Steve Wacker, who created the character after hearing about Amanat’s childhood, growing up as a Muslim-American, according to the NY Times.

The idea later came to fruition after the idea was pitched to writer G. Willow Wilson, a comic book author and recent convert to Islam.

“Any time you do something like this, it is a bit of a risk… You’re trying to bring the audience on board and they are used to seeing something else in the pages of a comic book,” Wilson said.

With the tension Muslim-Americans are facing due to ignorance and anti-Semitism, this comic can educate non-Muslim Americans, while giving Muslim-American children a superhero, which looks like them and understand what they go through, to look up to.

The series will be launched by Marvel in February of next year. However, Marvel has posted a picture of the cover on twitter for fans to see.
