A small town Mexican mayor is now dead after speaking out against the drug cartel.

The associated press reported that Ygnacio Lopez Mendoza, the mayor of the town Santa Ana was found dead on a roadside.

The former president Felipe Calderon took to twitter to know what happened to Mendoza and why.

Which says, “The crime problem in Michoacan won't be solved as long as local governments continue to avoid cleaning up local police forces and detectives who are infiltrated by the criminals," according to associated press.

Mendoza went through a lot during his administration due to drug cartel harassment and was on a hunger strike to demand more funds for local governments.

Mendoza is not the first official to die due to drawing the ire of the drug cartel. 40 mayors have been killed in Mexico according to Riccardo Bautista, president of the mayors association. In some of the deaths it is believed that the mayors own police force was responsible for their deaths.

In the port of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico the local police was replaced with the Mexican Navy in order to cut down corruption and violence that was becoming the norm in the city, reported News Max.
