MGMT’s new video is probably going to be one of the most head-scratching, thought-provoking and jaw-dropping videos that you have ever seen in your human life.
The video was made for their “Alien Days” single featured on their self-titled third studio album that was released on September 17. This track actually happens to be one of my favorites. (You can find out why, here!)
Directed by Sam Fleischner and Megha Barnabas, the video features Andrew VanWyngarden and his actual girlfriend Camille Rowe, as a couple who settled down in the countryside. Then one night they walk deep into the forest where Benjamin Goldwasser spins them in what looks like a larger-than-life gyroscope. Then we get a glimpse of an alien and alien’s hand touching a sphere that lights up blue. This is followed by the scenes of goats being goats, flowers blooming and the couple dancing in the sunny fields and swimming in the lake, engaging in regular couple activities. Then we see the aliens again, but these are not just any aliens. They happen to be professional ballet dancers. We then go back to the couple, only to discover that the wife is pregnant now. So, they keep being absolutely cute and acting all couply. After all these lighthearted, heartwarming, romantic scenes when your heart melts from cuteness overload, is actually where the video gets really weird.
And I’ll stop right here, because I don’t want to spoil it for you. I’ll leave it up to you to discover what happens next!
I personally think that the video is really creative, outlandish and very MGMT. It is just like any of the band’s previous videos. It doesn’t fail to surprise, entertain and shock. The video really complements the song and other way around.
