Thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama, Sesame Street has agreed to allow the Produce Marketing Association (PMS) to use their characters: Elmo, the Cookie Monster, Big Bird, and more, for free.

Politico reported that Sesame Street is licensing their characters freely for two years as part of First Lady Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.

In 2010, the White House noted that Michelle Obama launched the campaign Lets Move as a way to fight and prevent the rise of childhood obesity in America.

“Sesame Street” has decided to join in on the effort by helping to market healthy food to children through the use of their beloved characters on the long running show.

The use of cartoon characters to lure kids to food is nothing new. One can walk into the grocery store and find Dora fruit snacks, Shrek on cereal boxes and more.

The workshop is a genuine effort on the part of “Sesame Street” to aid the first lady in her Lets Move campaign. By licensing their characters for free, they are losing millions of dollars the usually charge for the use of their characters.

Although offered for two years, there is a lot of change that can take place in the diet of children and families with their help. The advertising strategy will not be seen by the public until mid-2014.
