Miley Cyrus was expected to do something at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam this weekend, but it was n’t certain what that would be until she took the stage. It turns out that it was lighting a joint on stage, which was actually censored when MTV aired the ceremony in the U.S.
MTV News said that when Cyrus picked up the award for Best Music Video for “Wrecking Ball,” the singer commented that her award wouldn’t fit in her suitcase. However, what would fit was a joint, which she lit up on stage. As Deadline notes, this moment was chopped out of the version that aired on MTV. She gets a word out before there’s an awkward cut to the audience. The camera goes back to her saying goodbye and walking off stage.
Of course, MTV News has gotten extra headlines out of this, even asking if it was illegal for Cyrus to light up in a public place in Amsterdam. The site notes that it is legal to smoke marijuana in coffee shops in Amsterdam, but smoking in public is illegal. Most officials don’t go after people for small amounts though, so don’t expect to see Cyrus getting arrested for her actions.
Cyrus also twerked during “Wrecking Ball,” and, while she was fully clothed, she danced with a midget.
