Oxford Dictionaries has named “selfie” the word of the year. In 2013, the frequency of the word has been increased by 17,000%, researchers say. To become the word of the year, it doesn’t need to have been created in the same year but it had to become noteworthy at that time.
It was indicated that the first selfie ever posted came in 2002 from an Australian man who was showing off the drunken injuries he obtained from a 21st birthday party.
According to The Telegraph, the college student posted the photo on an ABC forum asking advice about stitches on his lips. He is the first known person to use the term.
The student, only known as “Hopey,” wrote "Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie."
According to The BBC, “selfie” is described in the Oxford Dictionary as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
