Picture a deserted wasteland, high mountain ranges with empty adobe-like dwellings, with the moon high up in the sunny-day sky. Yes, pretty bland and boring but being the new video for the Pixie’s new single “What Goes Boom” makes the surprise/almost-funny ending worth it.
“What Goes Boom” is the newest single off the Pixies four song EP EP-1, the band’s first collection in over a decade. In what should have been a celebratory comeback has only been marred by the departure of founding bass player Kim Deal. Venturing on, the rest of the band completed the EP.
NPR who premiered the video for “What Goes Boom”, spoke with Black Francis, Pixies’singer/songwriter, and he stated, “"the song is about a girl, a girl who plays the bass guitar. It's got kind of a metal riff which I think that, on occasion, we all really enjoy playing, even though we're not a metal band. And I wouldn't be the first to write a song about some gal who plays bass."
The song itself really is metal based, with distorted and feedback driven guitars, but Pixies lyrics shine though; I’m a fatty in my caddy with a ‘ponic blunt and what better way to rhyme with Ringo then with the line Ping, pong, bingo?
The climax of video shows after a long journey through the wasteland, guitarist Joey Santiago exploding, creating a bloodstained pool, next to two other similar ones. OK. Though singing about the character in the song “Grace”, one cannot help but think one of those other spots could have been Deal.
The Pixies hit the road next year on a North American tour starting in January and running through the first part of March.
