Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Robert De Niro may get a chance to work together in The Intern, a new project in the works from director Nancy Meyers.
Worldview Entertainment has agreed to finance the film, which Meyers is also writing, reports Deadline, which first reported the news. Meyers is also going to produce with Oscar winner Scott Rudin and Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners. The budget is set at $35 million
The package will be up for sale at the American Film Market and Deadline is reporting that The Weinstein Company, Warner Bros. and Universal are in contention. Lotus will sell to international distributors.
According to Variety, Meyers, who has an Oscar nomination for co-writing Private Benjamin, has been attached to direct The Intern for awhile. It was originally set at Paramount, but then went into turnaround. She is also working on a wedding movie at Sony that has stalled.
If Witherspoon winds up starring in the movie, she’ll play the founder of a fashion website who decides to participate in its Senior Intern Program. Her first intern is a man in his 70s who previously ran his own business. At first, they clash but eventually the student becomes the teacher, helping her out with the business.
Meyers’ last feature was 2009’s It’s Complicated and her other credits as director include The Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give.
Witherspoon recently appeared in Mud and is working on Fox Dearchlight’s Wild. De Niro’s next film is American Hustle, by his Silver Linings Playbook director, David O. Russell.
