Scarlett Johansson’s voice part in the film Her has been deemed ineligible for a Golden Globe by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which could hurt her chances at becoming the first actor to receive an Oscar nomination for a film they’re not physically seen in.
Johansson, 29, provides the voice for Samantha, an advanced computer operating system , which Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls in love with in Spike Jonze’s film Her.
She won the Best Actress award at the Rome Film Festival earlier this month and there was some Oscar buzz around the role.
However, The Hollywood Reporter confirms the HFPA has notified Her’s distributor, Warner Bros., that Johansson’s part is ineligible for a Golden Globe. Historically, actors who win Golden Globes pave the way for Academy Awards.
The HFPA appealed their decision days ago, but the final verdict came on Tuesday. Technically, she’s still eligible for Oscar and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations but the Golden Globes were her best bet – since they don’t discriminate against actors who don’t belong to the Academy or SAG.
