A school bus went off of a bridge and plunged into a Kansas creek Thursday afternoon.
The bus fell onto its side in the creek at about 5 p.m. local time near Douglass, Kansas. Nine children were riding the Douglass Unified School District bus when it went into the swift-moving creek.
None of the children were reported injured in the accident. Local station KSN reports that the older children who were on the bus, about 13 years old, helped the younger children escape through the emergency hatch on the roof.
CNN reports that the children waited on the roof of the bus for a few hours before rescue teams arrived.
"The kids were removed, turned over to their parents. They're all in good spirits. They were cold at the time, but they're all doing well," Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet told KSN.
The driver, reportedly in his 60s, did not get out of the bus with the children. He was trapped inside for over an hour before a rescue team was able to retrieve him from the water.
He was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he is currently being treated for hypothermia.
Authorities do not know the cause of the accident, but it was noted that there had been heavy rainfall that morning.
"The water is very swift down there," Herzet told KWCH. "It took a little while to get everybody out. But everybody's safe, and it's a good day."
