This is the era of reinvention of pop music and the emergence of artists determined to break the rules when it comes to pop. Lana Del Rey, Marina & The Diamonds, Charli XCX, Natalia Kills, just to name the few. And then there’s Sizzy Rocket, a young emerging singer and songwriter who will pretty soon rocket herself amongst the stars and once there, she’ll be a lodestar to all pop artists to come.
She describes herself as a “piano-driven trill pop artist Sizzy Rocket,” a “zine self-publisher of the same name, and Iggy Pop connoisseur.” She also happens to have 14 years of classical piano training, a luscious, captivating voice, great songwriting skills and an attitude that you’ll love.
Her Thrills EP is a true pop gem. Hidden behind playful, addictive and juicy pop beats are raw and brutally honest lyrics that show all sides of Sizzy. Sometimes she’s daring, only looking for adrenaline and thrills and sometimes she’s willing to show off her more vulnerable and emotional side. But don’t let the bubbly and playful beats fool you, because the content is much more dark and mature.
Starting with…
Photobooth
Which is an upbeat pop track consisted of synthy, buzzing instrumentals, a very addictive badass beat and succulent vocals accompanied by a breathy, celestial choir on the bridges. And all is topped with sensual lyrics, that go- “I wanna kiss you in a pohotobooth/take my picture as I undress you…”
Thrills
Is another sanguine, energetic synth pop track, but its content is far from rosy. With “caffeine, nicotine, sex, pills/we do it for the thrills,” the lyrics walk the fine line between the need for ecstatic sensations and self-destruction. This track is highly addictive and catchy.
3D
Is a beautiful, melancholic love song also containing the synth elements, but this time with an isolated piano sections around “but if you change the real, I will tell you how I feel.” In the chorus, Sizzy sings: “You, you got me seeing things, seeing in 3D/Red and blue, ‘cause red is you and blue is me. This is a very creative songwriting based on a fresh perspective and a novel description of a love relationship, which is a subject matter of countless songs. Sizzy knows how to avoid clichés.
Jamie
Is solely relaying on a piano and sentimental, smooth vocals. Sizzy avoided using synth beats in this one and has decided to end the journey with a simple, yet stunning love ballad. There is an underlying sense of longing in this one.
Overall, Thrills makes me look forward to more from Sizzy. It is entertaining, engaging and sincere, an absolute emotional roller coaster. You’ll be wowed.
Side note: Sizzy has tweeted that she is working on a second EP right now and it will be titled Thief.
