On Tuesday, two suicide bombers hit the Iranian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, and at least 22 people were killed, with over a 140 injured.
BBC News reports that Sunni jihadist group Abdullah Azzam Brigades have claimed to be behind the attack. The attack was a "double martyrdom operation carried out by two heroes from the heroic Sunnis of Lebanon," the head of the group said.
The attack is likely because Iran is backing Hezbollah, a group who in turn are supporting the Bashar al-Assad-led Syrian government.
Reports on whether Ebrahim Ansari, the cultural attache, was dead have been conflicting. The Iranian ambassador said Ansari had died, but wasn't sure if he was in the embassy at the time of the attack. The Iranian foreign ministry, however, are claiming that Ansari is still alive.
According to CNN, the Brigades are demanding the release of several members currently being held in a Lebanese prison.
Iranian Ambassador Ghazanfar Roknabadi said, "We have no fear when it comes to giving more martyrs in the line of duties." He also noted that any future attacks would not change Iran's mind on its agendas.
Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati called the bombings, "a cowardly terrorist attack" and for the public "to exercise the utmost restraint because we are going through a very difficult phase."
