Olivia Wise, the 16-year-old girl whose cover of Katy Perry’s “Roar” went viral as people learned of her inoperable brain tumor, has died. Wise, who lived in Toronto, died on Monday, her family said.
“She died peacefully in her home surrounded by the extraordinary love of her family,” the family told CNN.
Wise recorded “Roar” at a studio in September and it was posted on YouTube last month. It has been seen nearly 1.2 million times since then and also drew the attention of Perry herself. The singer recorded a 30-second message to Wise, telling her that she was “moved” by the video. She urged Olivia to “keep roaring!”
The attention her “Roar” got helped raise $77,000 for the Liv Wise Fund, which was founded to raise money for brain tumor research.
Olivia also wrote “Simple Girl,” a song about hoping to live longer, at 11. She recorded that song the same day she did “Roar” and her family posted that as well just before her death.
“Every day, she wished for a cure, and rarely succumbed to negative thoughts,” her mother told CNN. She said that Olivia’s diagnosis did not change her personality at all. “It only enhanced it. She took the news in a mature, reasonable, responsible way,” her mother said. “Even in the most difficult moments, she managed to bring laughter and friendship to all that were caring for her.”
After Olivia’s death was reported, Perry posted a message on Twitter about how inspiring Olivia is to her.
Olivia Wise, I can hear you singing with the angels now. Your spirit & strength has inspired me & so many others... May you rest in peace.
