The Best Man Holiday almost edged out Thor: The Dark World at the box office this weekend. The Best Man sequel made $30.6 million in its opening weekend and in its second week, Thor made $38.5 million.
Best Man Holiday made almost three times its original did fifteen years ago with Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs leading the cast. The original made $9 million in its opening weekend.
Fox News notes Malcolm D. Lee talked about the presence of African American films in the box office, but wanted to change the formula.
"It's a familiar refrain, and it's getting a little tired," he said. "I thought we had a chance to do something special." Eighty-seven percent of audiences were African American.
Its success likely cements yet another film, with Lee noting "If there is going to be a sequel, it won't take 14 years.”
Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsoworth’s Thor has now made a total of $479.8 million worldwide. Its international total from this weekend alone was $52.5 million.
TIME notes The Dark World has already beat out 2011’s Thor, which totaled $449.3 million.
