Daniel Radcliffe has been cast in Tokyo Vice, based off Jake Adelstein's memoir Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Harry Potter actor will play Adelstein. FilmNation is financing the film and will search for foreign distributors at the American Film Market.
Anthony Mandler, who mostly directs music videos and commercials, is set to direct, with Binn Jakupi executive producing. John Lesher and Adam Kassan will produce the film and J.T. Rogers wrote the adaptation.
"I want to thank Jake for trusting me with his story," Lesher said. "We both share a love of Japan and, together with Glen, FilmNation and Daniel, I can think of no better team."
According to Variety, shooting on Tokyo Vice is set for mid-2014.
The film is based off of Adelstein's time in Tokyo where he was the only American journalist accepted in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Press Club. The journalist's work helped to expose a Yakuza leader.
THR notes Glen Basner of FilmNation commented, "Tokyo Vice reminds me of some of the great films of the 1970s in which an outsider gets embroiled in a complex and mysterious world and must decide whether doing the right thing is worth risking his life and the people around him."
