Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who refuses to resign, admitted on Wednesday that he has bought illegal drugs within the past two years.
According to CNN, though Ford might admit to buying drugs, he says that he is not addicted to either drugs or alcohol. Last week, he had acknowledged that he smoke crack cocaine.
Ford says he only used the drugs and alcohol “out of sheer stupidity” during those times he used. He also said that his attorney “told me not to talk to the police,” and is not cooperating with them.
The mayor continues to ignore the calls for his resignation saying last week, “I was elected to do a job and that is exactly what I am going to continue doing.” He added, “We live in a democracy and on October 27, 2014, I want the people of this great city to decide if they want Rob Ford to be their mayor.”
USA Today reports that during Wednesday’s city council meeting over a motion on asking Ford to step aside he said, “I ask forgiveness, I have apologized, I want to move on, that’s all I can say right now.”
The council meeting was opened by Jaye Robinson who showed a petition with 30 of 44 city council members signatures that asked Ford to step aside.
Robinson said, “Our city’s reputation has been damaged. Together we stand to ask you to step aside and take a leave of absence. Let’s get on with city business.”
